The Inspiration

Brian Walsh has trained as a hypnotherapist and is a master practitioner of Neurolinguistic Programming. As well, he specializes in accelerated learning and communications.

This is a true story, as told by Brian Walsh.

Years ago a friend of mine had a coronary at work.

One after another, several curious people dropped by, but none could offer him any assistance or re-assurance. Before the paramedics arrived, a police officer showed up, stood watch at his office door yet said nothing to him.

In the ambulance, the paramedics, in between their discussion of a recent football game, asked his name and filled out some forms. Again he received neither encouragement nor any re-assurance.

At the hospital, he had a long wait on a gurney in the emergency corridor. Again he was ignored. He felt like an object, not a person. Eventually, he was wheeled into a room without any idea as to what to expect: when he’d see a doctor, how serious was his condition, what type of treatment he was in for. He felt totally abandoned and extremely frightened.

The first person to treat him as a real person was a janitor who’d come in to mop up the room. He asked my friend: "How’s it going?"

Along the way, there were many opportunities to ease the discomfort my friend experienced. A few simple words of encouragement could have greatly enhanced his immediate wellbeing and long term recovery.

His story and many others like it, served as an inspiration for this book.
